about

I wanted to create a 4 track EP of modular synth music inspired by my walks around the Dorset village I live in, and which would be a companion piece to the 20 minute track “Trees in General: And the Larch” (which is released on Castles in Space on a single-sided etched 12” on 1st April 2022)). Together they make two sides of a scattered album with a common theme running through it: I had the idea of wondering what the audio environment would sound like if the tiniest sounds of twilight were amplified into cacophonous sonic events — obviously, this isn't what this EP turned out to be, there's too much melody and rhythm for that, but it still formed the basis of creating works infused with texture, grain, descending low light, outdoor ambience and imagined sonic minutiae cranked up to the fore.

The three tracks, “Thousandfold Amplified Twilight”, “Fractal Growth in a Luminous Space” and “Forest Fluorescence (Wet Weather Signals)” are the pieces which best invoke that feeling of twilight amplification and really get deep into the grainy cloud of previously hidden natural aural artefacts. The A side to the 7” single, “Looking at Lifeforms” is more the theme tune to the EP, like a late night Open University programme taking a close-up look at lifeforms, a microscopic safari.

Artwork-wise, as a big fan of Zeke Clough's work (I was turned onto him by his phenomenal Skull Disco 12” sleeves) I was over the moon when Colin at Castles in Space hooked us up and I couldn't be happier with the imagery that Zeke conjured. He managed to perfectly capture the combination of fluorescent, vibrant nature and deep woodland weirdness that was the inspiration behind the music.
