about

"There’s a lot of hope during the beginning, but things take a darker turn throughout the record."

In his Ffion alias, Thomas Ragsdale delivers a transcendental and darkly beautiful statement with this exclusive new recording for the Castles in Space Subscription Library.

Says Ragsdale, "The concept is based around how birds fly home at night across the sea and the problems they encounter in crashing into cliffs, lighthouses or buoys. The lights misdirect them and they lose their sense of perception. It’s pretty harrowing!"

The record is ethereal yet brutally physical at the same time - uplifting, yet shot through with an uncomfortable sense of foreboding.

"I’ve shaped the EP in a way that has peaks of energy and brooding intensity to guide you through their journey and ‘voyage into radiance’."

It's intended as a soundtrack of sorts and is accompanied by a booklet laden with pictures which are full of symbolism and mystery. The imagery of the birds, confused and doomed is incredibly powerful and once seen, will linger in the memory for days. The record and booklet are a testament to the skilfulness with which Thomas merges the visual with a powerful redefinition of his beloved “slow techno”. An absolutely stunning record.
